NAS's have their own operating system, usually a Linux variant, so there is always translation and indexing when storing or serving data, plus they decide on their own when to carry out internal housekeeping tasks. This can cause interruptions to data transfer, emphasising the general leisurely performance. Better for longer-term storage and making files available to other users on the network. Re the MacBook - portable USB SSD drives aren't prohibitively expensive nowadays and if you haven't a spare port, neither are little hubs.
