An eink Kindle is a physical ereader, made by Amazon. Yes, buying an used one will work, if you register it to your Amazon account. After registering you need the serial number for the deDRM plugin, and then you can use the Download & Transfer option on your Kindle Content and Devices page to download your books to your computer and import them to Calibre. The Download & Transfer option is only available if you have a registered eink Kindle on your account; that's why you need the device.
Note that a Fire tablet won't work, it must be an eink Kindle.
