It sounds like a permissions problem to me, check if calibre has read/write permission for your library.

I would say the database is completely screwed, I tried to restore and rebuild but only made it worse as it now contains only a few entries, mostly quick start guides. I had more than 2000 books in there previously, 44 authors.

The books are all still there of course but Calibre can't add them to the library
