I can't read with the light off. The screen is just too dim and ugly. I admit I don't usually read in very good light (natural or artificial). I'm a night owl and read mostly in the evening and at night, always indoors; and my rooms are not brightly lit.
I'm used to reading with the light off. I've had a Sony Reader since the days of the PRS-500 where there was no light. I actually prefer the background not to be white.
