Your claim is nonsense, because all the film changes is that less light hits the reflective screen, which therefore reflects less and that is brightness evenly across all gray levels - neither does darkness change the slightest bit of contrast.

And to the physics:
Contrast = (Light Amount Max - Light Amount Min)/Light Amount Min
And that remains the same with different amounts of illumination
