Your mistake is that you didn't set the front light to the same brightness level with white - then black has the same value as with Carta 1200.
Foto: Boox Tab Mini C vs Tolino Epos 3 = Kobo Sage, Carta 1200: and here is my impression that the white/black difference (contrast) is larger in Tab Mini C and that the black and white font boundaries are less sharp on the Tolino Epos 3
