My laptop has a PCIe SSD and a SATA HDD. The user data is all on the HDD. It's very much faster than my HDD only laptop.
My Desktop "shoebox" has also a PCIe SSD and a SATA HDD, though 3.5" instead of 2.5". It can take 2x 2.5" in the same location using an optional mount.
You don't say what sort of Macbook, but unfortunately most can only expand using a portable drive. The NAS also has the issue that you need a network connection to access it. I do have a server but no application on the laptop or desktop of anyone relies on it except for backups or sharing for download. It does other stuff.
