I don't know about "sympathy" but an understanding and respect for the way nature works.
(Interesting timing. A neighbor from down the street was just hospitalized after being bitten by a copperhead snake. We only have two venomous snakes in New Jersey, and my neighborhood is in copperhead habitat. I'm hoping people don't overreact. I've never seen a copperhead in the area but I have seen about 6 or 8 species of snakes in the back yard -- from small DeKay and garter snakes that eat slugs and insects to milk snakes that eat mice and other rodents. I'd much rather have a few snakes than a lot more bugs and mice. End rant.)
