I'm not seeing series info preserved after removal and replacement, but I edit the version number in the title, so no doubt it looks like a new ebook.

Re: "Do not treat replacements as new books"
I thought this can cause issues when ToC is different or if there are annotations/highlights/bookmarks? So I always remove the book being updated, but usually via Calibre.
Occasionally I'll delete/remove a DNF ebook on the Kobo if I don't intend ever trying it again, though I might leave it in Calibre for posterity!
