Does she remember the e-mail address used with the old account? I no longer have a Kindle to check, but I think the e-mail address may also be listed somewhere in the settings of the old Kindle.

And if the old Kindle is old enough, it might be possible to get the books off it and remove the DRM from them. Which model is her old Kindle?
