I set up my collections via Amazon's Manage Your Content page, then if I have more than two books to add to a collection on my PW, I open the collection, and tap add (looks like +/-) and select all the books going to the collection after sorting by most recent and downloaded.
It does fuss about syncing, but I ignore it if the book wasn't an Amazon bought book (I buy books from Kobo & Play Books, or get public domain books mostly, with some direct magazine subs/Tor.com's ebook club), as I have it in Calibre anyway.
