Thanks DVdm, I have been looking for a solution for this for a long time now.
After almost giving up, I can confirm this works very well (Ubuntu 20 LTS, Calibre 5.38)

Preferences/Behavior
unchecked "EPUB"

--> epubs magically open faster than snapping a finger.
