If you just want to check whether a book meets the Enhanced Typesetting requirements, you don't need to use the plugin. However, you can only export .kpf and .mobi7 files from Kindle Previewer.
I use it mostly for converting .epub files to .kfx files, which I sideload on my Kindle and my tablet devices.

IMHO, .kfx files are best for sideloading because thanks to
jhowell's excellent
Calibre KFX Output plugin the output will be pretty much identical to what you'll get from Amazon.
However, you don't need to use the KindleGen plugin for this, because you can also convert your .epub books to .kfx books with Calibre and send them to your device.
