Also use a text editor that respects UNIX style line endings (all text editors on Linux and Notepad++ on Windows), not a wordprocessor.
I copy the file, rename copy, edit copy, SaveAs with original name and copy/overwrite file on Kobo.

The setting survives a firmware update, but probably not a factory reset.
I've done this on Aura HD H2O, Nia, Libra, Libra2, Sage and Elipsa for myself and others.
