The latest Genre Grapevine by Jason Sanford is a special issue called Genre Grapevine on Why They Want Us to Call it AI. It is worth a read.

In it, he links to an article in IEEE Spectrum by Michael I. Jordan, a pioneer in machine learning called Stop Calling Everything AI, Machine-Learning Pioneer Says. He is an IEEE Fellow and an authority on machine learning. Yeah, I think we can call this guy an expert.

Jordan points out that "the underlying systems do not involve high-level reasoning or thought." (Note: IEEE is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and also includes the IEEE Computer Society.)
