I suspect in Calibre the option to ignore newer firmware on Kobo (or what ever the option is called) wasn't checked and the Kobo got 4.37.x before Calibre was 6.22 (supports 4.37.x). So nothing to do with the Kobo not recognising epubs, but Calibre not recognising the Kobo after the upgrade to 4.37.x which just needed the box ticked as the note on the thread here said the Kobo database hadn't changed. Which is what the issue is really about.
