The DRM itself hasn't changed, it's access to files with different levels of DRM.

There's a few different Kindle formats. Older ones have had their DRM broken while the newer ones haven't. Amazon recently made it more difficult to access some of the older formats.

Older books (except certain ones - textbooks and, oddly, stuff published in Indian markets) are mostly unaffected.

But newer ones--pretty much anything published this year--you can only get the DeDRMable formats through a few specific methods, and one of those requires buying a Kindle. (Thankfully, the other only requires a free Bluestacks emulator and a bit of fuddling around with console commands. )
