Oh, and my PMR446 cheap supermarket two way radios have 3 x AAA cells. Door unclips and the neoprene sealing band has sharper corners than a phone.
It also has a seal on the 3.5mm jack socket.
The current situation is simply to have built in failure to get you to buy a new one. Not cost as often it's the most expensive models that can be repaired etc.
