Kindle for safe experiments?

I'm interested in experimenting more with the startup sequence of the Kindle.

Unfortunately it seems that there are a plethora of ways to hang or crash during the boot process.

If I have serial port, my understanding is that I can interrupt the boot, get into Fastboot, and then push either a new (signed) rootfs, or wipe '/var/local'

The questions:
* What is the most recent Kindle that I can recover this way?
* Has 'closed chassis' debug been ruled out for the Type-C devices (eg - CC1/CC2 resistor values?)
* Is there anything I can put into the etc/upstart that will recover from early boot failures (eg, framework doesn't start or upstart fails later in the process)
