EVERY reader I have owned (5 to date), has a BEZEL. Even my phone (not used for reading) has one. So the need for other than a tiny margin to compensate for 'over scan' or slight misalignment of the display under the bezel is all that is needed for basic body text.
I agree about the margins.

As to the Kindle, use negative margins to decrease. It's what I do. Also if you want a specific font size that you cannot get with the Aa size settings, just set the font size you do want in the body style in the CSS.
