then how is she able to imagine something that is horrible if it cannot be imagined in the first place?
Aha! Perhaps when they confront the great googly-eyed THING, they only see a hazy black blob, because their puny human minds cannot comprehend they great unknowable before them?

There's a good basis for a horror story in there...
