I recently tried to convert an AZW3 file to ePub, and Send To Kindle wouldn't take it. I had to fix errors in the AZW3 that ebook-edit identified, and then it all went smoothly. I assume the publisher made the original error and somehow conversion to KFX (the usual format downloaded to Kindle) patched over the issue.

I almost never side load AZW3 to Kindle (I would covert to KFX for side loading) so I have no experience to offer on that.
