The first thing that comes to mind is that you have to use a valid ePub file. The specification says that you MUST have a file called container.xml and it MUST be in the META-INF directory.

Simply renaming a file as .epub does not make it a valid epub file.

And also, where did you obtain that file so others may know to avoid it.
