From my experience in the past converting epubs to “dual MOBI” files in Calibre and sending them to my kindle over the cloud, the reason I would get an AZW file instead of a KF8 often had something to do with footnotes; I never investigated fully but I did try removing footnotes from books I received as AZW, converting and sending again as a dual MOBI, and getting the KF8 that time around.
But it could also be completely unrelated to the issue here as the conversion from epub is done by Amazon.
