Yes. Everybody knows your intent was clearly to insult. But I've always heard the saying stated as "...
leaves a bit to be desired", as in "lacking something". Rather than "...
are a bit to be desired", which implies desirability. So your insult could be misconstrued as a compliment. Probably not by anyone who frequents this forum though. But the theoretical potential to come up with the exact opposite interpretation of your intent is the irony I was talking about. It's humorous, because that is an unexpected twist.
