But these were not poor (Those never sound good).

A best I could come up with, was the 'damping factor' of the amp played a big part.
(Big speakers (and these were all 10"+ models), generate voltage at the release of a large excursion and the amp did not deal with that well. FWIW most of these amps were early Transistor output in the 50W range.
