Many 32 bit programs don't work on Win7 64 or Win 10 64. Especially any using the RS322 OCX for VB6, which ironically work on 64 bit Linux with WINE 32 & 64 installed (mapping either a USB serial or real serial native to Linux to any COM port in WINE).

Very many Win9x programs didn't work on NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 (even real 32 bit ones) and plenty didn't work on Windows XP. Device Drivers incompatible at many stages of Windows leaving expensive HW orphaned or the need to have an old box with Win98, or NT 4.0 or XP.
Windows 11 adds new incompatibilities.

Historically Apple supported older programs (even on Power PC to x86 change) better than Windows. MS advice now for Win10 is to use the included Oracle Virtual Box and install an older Windows on a VM. Which you can do on Mac or Linux. Naturally a VM works better than WINE (Virtual Box supports Windows USB drivers and WINE doesn't), but the overhead is much worse and you need a licensed copy of the desired Windows Version.

Yes, Apple does end support for HW (Macs, phones, tablets) and MacOS or iOS, sooner than MS does and much sooner than Android Playstore, but till recently application compatibility was better.
