It is simply extortion. Either let Apple fully gate-keep all software that runs on their desktop (even if opensource, free, and never using the App Store), or they will make people "fear" your software, and use up your support time by telling people your software needs to be updated and to contact its developer.

Way to be a good citizen Apple!

Aside: if we could bill Apple for our time it takes to deal with the fake "issue" they caused, we could all be in the money!
