As a follow-up yes it was the 1.1.1.255 update that broke my WINDOWS send-to-kindle. I can send the same files via the web version (which is actually kinda well done) and email. Unfortunately I didn't have the nice uninstall utility so when tried to go back to 1.1.0.253 it was still broken. I suspect they screwed up a registry key that indicates valid file types because the app doesn't even really run--it just pops up a dialog and terminates. I spent a very painful 30 minutes on chat explaining to "support" how their apps work and they said they filed a "ticket with engineering" which I actually wrote for them. Resolved in 7 days said my fine Amazon representative.

When I get a chance I am going to go into the registry and manually clean out the keys and then reinstall the old version. Or maybe I should buy the Revo utility because it does have a good rep (as demonstrated here) of cleaning things up.
