Yes, I know you downloaded the epub, but ebook versions of textbooks are tricky, especially if there is a PDF version.

How is it on Pocketbook on Android or iOS? I think it supports ADE.

Kobo also may use an older ADE.

Journals & Textbooks in electronic form are problematic and a rip-off compared to other ebooks.

Also formatting is often problematic on ebook versions of textbooks (PDF has no issues) because epub2 was aimed at novels. Then also the quality of ebook formatting by big publishers is poor compared to paper/PDF versions.
