That would explain why one CS rep told me not to turn the unit off, just put it to sleep.

It shouldn't build the indexes again... but any index it was in the middle of then yes, it will need to restart that again.
But, I see NO reason to turn it off unless you plan to not use it for several days. So, just put it to sleep or just put it down and it will sleep after 10 mins or so all on its own. I never turn mine off and the battery lasts a few weeks with my reading patterns.
Then again, I don't store more than 20 or so "to-read" books on it. So the indexing won't take hours... which I have heard is possible if you have 1GB or so of ebooks on it.
