Are you guys talking about truly empty spans (<span></span>) or just naked spans (<span>some text here</span>) with content, but no attributes?
I ask because right, wrong, or indifferent ... blindly removing the latter (naked span pairs) CAN affect the rendering of validly styled xhtml in an epub.
