My calibre catalog of books is on external hard drive. Can I run calibre without it?

My calibre catalog of books is huge, so I am keeping them on an external 2TB hard drive. It seems that the calibre program also is on the external hard drive. Unfortunately this means that if I don't have my external hard drive, I can't run calibre.

Is there a way to run calibre without the external hard drive, while keeping all my books on the external hard drive.

(Just to be clear, when I say that my book/catalog is on my external hard drive, I mean to say that they are in a calibre-sorted / calibre-organized sort of way.)

I'm on Linux Mint
