Depending on your usecase, if you use Action Chains you may want to try with multisort custom module. This can be added to the Favourites menu without the invalidation issue.

The reason I wanted the Multi-column option in Favorites was to avoid inadvertently selecting the first item:
reverse the current primary key.
Pretty sure it goes awry when I switch libraries via calibre://show-book links to 'books' in other libraries. My attraction to Sort By was its potential to replace my usage of View Manager. Not that's there's anything wrong with VM, but… less is better, least is best - I should put that in my sig.
