I tried that when I first set up the "new" Mini (since it was already "out of date" from the first time they EOL'd Minis). The update kept timing out. So I downloaded the firmware, said I was going to use the Kobo Desktop, which gave me access to the Mini on my Linux computer. Than I just had to move over the firmware (like doing a regular manual update). I'm more worried about the security certificate than anything else. If they base that on the device model (and not the firmware) then I guess there's not much I can do about it.
