I'm a tech guru, so editing a Kobo config. file or even hacking the database doesn't particularly bother me. While I can see non-technical people being scared to death. On the other hand, registering a fake email address is easy.

As for why you would want to do this. It may be just me but I really don't like being forced to register something I have bought just to be able to use it.
