As far as I can tell, it might have been a mix of PEBCAK and/or actual issues with the original (and/or prerelease) FW.

PEBCAK because using the pen disables any and all PM *and* pegs a core at 100% CPU, and that obviously murders battery life (by design), down to a screen on time that can drop lower than even a bad Android phone; so any testing done that way would have skewed the results; and FW issues, because there might have been cases that silently broke PM (either standby, or, worse, suspend. I've seen the PowerCover being able to break suspend entirely until the next reboot, for instance), and those cases might have been fairly easy to trip at the time, especially in a review setting where you spend your time messing with various stuff vs., just reading.

In any case, they all resolved around at least standby failing to kick in, and possibly suspend too, in some more extreme cases.
