The firmware is too old, it doesn't have the necessary security certificate version "TL something or other." I ran into this with a Mini. I think they give you two choices, to set up with WiFi or connect to the Kobo Desktop. When I connected to the Kobo Desktop it never updated. When I connected via WiFi it did what yours is doing, "can't update."

My solution (on Linux, I'm guessing it will work on Mac as well) was to manually download the firmware update I wanted to use, then tell the Mini to connect to the Kobo Desktop (which gave me a connection to the my Linux computer, then I just copied over the update files to the Mini). Then restarted it. Once the firmware is updated, it will successfully connect to Kobo's website for registration and syncing.
