I invoke the Item editor from the book list via Shift+F2 in a cell.
What I had in mind was this: the Category editor button would be a Go To, i.e. pressing it would do whatever pressing the Item editor OK does; and then, rather than returning control to the book list, it would take a detour via the corresponding Category editor.
But I can see how that might go against the grain of MDE.
Added: I can add individual
Manage Categories→Custom columns→«whatever» to Favourites… that'll do me.
Might make another clone of Favourites for the Manage Category columns for which I want to have something in Links.
