The Kindle DRM situation is complicated. The issue with Kindle firmware newer than version 5.12.1 has to do with books delivered directly to a Kindle device over-the-air and then extracted from the device using USB. Those books will mostly be in KFX format with DRM that cannot be removed by the existing tools.
Obtaining books using Download & Transfer from the Amazon website never uses KFX format regardless of the firmware version involved. It always delivers in a format where DRM removal is possible. The main problem with that is some books are unavailable for Download & Transfer, including those borrowed via Kindle Unlimited.
