Figured it out. Had been keeping Calibre running continuously to pull the news feeds at intervals. Task mgr showed the 3 Calibre-related processes using > 8gb memory.
Oops. Restarting Calibre reduced memory usage back to a more reasonable ~ 300mb. Export is chugging along fine now.
