I listen to a lot of audiobooks and have been a member with Audible for years, I have the 24 credits per year option getting them all in one go and can spend them whenever I wish. I always run out and Audible always offer me more credits for £3.99 each which is fantastic value imho.
However the very first thing I do after purchase is download the book and run it through InAudible (Mods feel free to remove the name if it's not allowed to be mentioned) to strip the DRM so I can play it on any device and use any application I wish as the Audible app is absolutely awful.
If you're not using the app I can't see how ads would work as if you authorise something like iTunes to play your audible books there's nothing connecting to Audibles servers to insert ads once the book is in your app of choice even if you haven't stripped the DRM and you happen to let your membership lapse.
