Ah, I think I just figured it out myself.
what it took was to
1. first delete the KINDLE plugboard...
2. re-create a new one for KINDLE (again) with the script
3. set the destination field to "title"
4. remove the .mobi in the Calibre library, then
5. re-send to device...
and VOILA!
not sure if it was one thing that would have fixed this, or i needed to do all five steps. but it's working now, and I'm happy!
so key was for me to change from "title sort" to "title", and force Calibre to re-convert the epub to mobi...
yay!
