Did you follow those instructions?

BTW If you have not done so, First download the Patched version (no notice to those at same main level) 16.14.1
Patched version of what? Calibre?

I used Win32DiskImager (because the recommended USB Duplicator Image Writer would not see the SD card I used) to write the firmware image to a 2 gig SD card. Popped it into the Kobo's slot and turned it on.

After waiting quite a long time it booted and said it was updating the software. Once that was done I turned it off, popped the card out and turned it back on again.

Another loooong wait and it was running again off the internal card.

Now the 1gig partition is visible to Explorer but *not seen as formatted*. Seen by Calibre but not as a reader device. Still errors despite the device working fine in every way except for playing nicely with my computer.

Next experiment. Use Explorer (instead of disk management) to format the 1gig partition. Still not seen by Calibre.

Safely remove, unplug, power off, then on... after quite a long wait it's Updating the software on your eReader...

Done with that. Plug into USB, go to manage. Drive is inaccessible, parameter is incorrect.

I wonder if it might be some oddity with USB drivers? I'm having a similar issue with a Garmin Nuvi 1300 GPS where it's supposed to have an internal partition visible to Windows Explorer AND whatever card is in the SD slot, but neither is visible. The internal shows as Unallocated in disk management.

Trying to get the debug info again but the Kobo is taking the same super long time to start up every time. Damaged micro SD?

BUT every other USB thing I have, including other GPS receivers, and my Android phone do not have this problem.
