The reason you want a Kindle device is that it enables the "Download and Transfer via USB" function on the Devices and Content page of the Amazon site. If you don't have an e-ink Kindle registered on your Amazon account, this option is not available, so there is no way to download the book directly on your PC.
As for extracting the book from an Onyx (or other android e-reader), it would only work with outdated versions of the app, which may or may not work on your Android version. Books downloaded by more recent versions of the app are encoded in a newer format which cannot be read outside of the app (the DRM cannot be removed).
One last option is to use an Android emulator, which is able to run an older version of the Kindle app. You can find more info in
this thread. Once the book is extracted, you will still need to convert it to ePub - you will find more info on this at the link provided by DNSB above.
