That was a pitfall for me at first, as I run a Dockerized instance of Calibre on my NAS, and the DeDRM Tools wouldn't work when I downloaded them to my Desktop and imported them from the NAS.
You don't use the Kindle, only it's serial number (can be copy/pasted from your Amazon account) in the plug-in. Then you download for USB transfer from the Amazon page of your content and import those files into Calibre. The Kindle can sit in a drawer and rot once you register.
