I'd say maybe he's a tabletop gamer, like Battletech or Warhammer
Battletech at least (unsure about WH) divides its playing field into hexagonal units of space. I could see a hex template like that being useful for sketching terrain ideas or similar.
These templates are quite useful, I'll be adding the ones I might use onto my device the next time I sync it.
