The average monitor is 72 - 100dpi. Which means the device has a higher resolution than the average screen. However, slightly lower resolution than the average book (@ 85lpi/600dpi). If you are accustomed to reading from a digital medium - which you seem to be somewhat computer knowledgeable - reading any serif font is going to be weird (as at least 95% of fonts used on computers by default are sans). However, the reverse is also true (see previous sans vs. serif discussion).
