The links in the link provide info about why we use "epub.css" for epubs instead of "html5.css".
There's nothing epub3 specific in that. So, as the links say, if you read epubs from publishers that assume their books will only be read on web browser engines you're fine setting the default style to html5.
The epub version doesn't matter.
