If I purchased a good copy and then saved it to my private library, then if/when the vendor "fixes" it with a censored version, I still have what I bought.

That is why it is called automatic updates. If you turn it off, you can see in your library which books have an update available. And update manually each individual book. There is never censorship involved - censorship is governmental overreach. Apparently you should never trust any publishers that are known not to honor authors wishes, especially when said author is already dead.
